The purpose of statistical science is to study data arising from the observation of phenomena in the world around us. It includes the collection and processing of data. The areas of application are numerous as numerical observations related to the study of quantitative and qualitative traits of populations and related to phenomena in physics, economic, social, biological and medical fields, must often be collected and analyzed.
In the department, a team of statisticians covers the following research areas:
- time series, studying models to describe variables observed over time;
- sampling methods to describe survey data;
- multivariate data resulting from the simultaneous observation of several characteristics;
- resampling methods;
- Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations, Bayesian and nonparametric methods.
