Michel Delfour est fellow Guggenheim, Killam, et SIAM et récipient du prix Urgel-Archambault en physique, mathématiques et génie de l'Acfas. Ses domaines de recherche sont l'optimisation et le design de forme, l'analyse et le contrôle des systèmes d'équations différentielles à retard et/ou aux dérivées partielles, le contrôle et la stabilisation des structures spatiales, et les méthodes numériques en équations différentielles et en optimisation. Parmi ses intérêtes récents, on retrouve l'affectation des fréquences radio aux systèmes de mobiles terrestres, la modélisation des coques minces et asymptotiques, le design des endoprothèses en cardiologie interventionnelle, et le design de la dynamique du largage des médicaments. Il est l'auteur de 13 livres et de plus de 175 articles. Il fut président de la Société mathématique du Canada et a servi sur de nombreux conseils et comités de subvention canadiens ainsi que sur des panels et comités d'administration d'organismes internationaux.  Il est membre de l'Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec depuis 1966 et a été impliqué dans plusieurs activités conseils pour des organismes canadiens.

Three-Dimensional Model of the Release and Diffusion of Paclitaxel in the Stent-Polymer-Wall-Lumen System of a Blood Vessel Thèses et mémoires dirigés / 2018-08

Abstract
Les stents sont utilisés en cardiologie interventionnelle pour garder ouvert un vaisseau malade. Les nouveaux stents sont recouverts d’un agent médicinal pour prévenir l’obstruction prématurée suite à la prolifération de cellules musculaires lisses (CML) dans la lumière du vaisseau. Afin de réaliser le taux nécessaire de largage de médicament pendant la période thérapeutique désirée, la tendance est aux largages biphasiques ou possiblement polyphasiques à partir d’un mélange de polymères dégradables. Blanchet-Delfour-Garon [7] ont introduit une équation différentielle ordinaire quadratique à 2 paramètres et Garon-Delfour [42] une équation différentielle partielle 3D quadratique à 2 paramètres pour caractériser la dynamique du largage du médicament pour chaque polymère. Les deux paramètres de ces modèles peuvent être obtenus expérimentalement à partir du protocole de mesures de Lao et al. pour des polymères purs et pour des mélanges de polymères en créant des conditions de réservoir infini. Ces équations constituent un outil pratique pour simuler numériquement et théoriquement le largage 3D d’un médicament imprégné dans une mince couche de polymère vers la paroi et la lumière du vaisseau sanguin aux fins d’évaluation et de design d’un stent. L’objectif principal de la recherche était de passer d’une surface plate de polymère à la surface courbe qui recouvre un véritable stent de géométrie complexe. En premier lieu, le modèle à diffusion linéaire (et les résultats) de Delfour Garon-Longo [31] pour un vaisseau modélisé par un cylindre droit ont été généralisés au cas d’un vaisseau avec surface cylindrique courbe en introduisant les conditions de transparence appropriées à l’entrée et à la sortie. Ce modèle a ensuite été utilisé pour obtenir les équations de la dose et de la concentration normalisée. En second lieu, les conditions de transparence et le largage quadratique ont été intégrés à l’équation aux dérivées partielles 3D de Garon-Delfour [42]. Ce deuxiéme modèle non linéaire a ensuite été utilisé pour étudier la concentration normalisée en fonction de l’épaisseur du polymère et de la constante de diffusion du milieu ambiant.

«Sur la figure des colonnes» de Lagrange revisité Thèses et mémoires dirigés / 2018-01

Abstract
Le problème du flambage de la colonne a été formulé par Lagrange vers 1770 et sa résolution a fait l'objet de nombreux travaux. Plusieurs solutions ont été proposées, mais toutes comportaient des erreurs. Lagrange, lui-même, avait trouvé que la colonne optimale était un cylindre droit, ce qui fut démontré sous-optimal par la suite. Les solutions erronées et publiées étaient principalement dues au fait que le problème n'est pas différentiable à l'optimum. En 1992, Cox et Overton ont revisité des variantes de ce problème et ont montré l'existence d'une solution pour des profils bornés inférieurement et supérieurement par des constantes strictement positives en utilisant la dualité d'Auchmuty et le gradient généralisé de Clarke. Pour Egorov, les hypothèses a priori de Cox et d'Overton ne permettent pas d'affirmer l'existence de solutions, car elles éliminent la possibilité de profils dégénérés. Dans ce mémoire, on étudiera la forme optimale sans imposer de bornes a priori et l'on cherchera à extraire toute l'information. Dans un premier temps, on a étudié la version discrétisée du problème qui permet de travailler avec des espaces de dimension finie et d'obtenir l'existence d'une colonne optimale dans tous les cas. Le problème conserve cependant ses caractéristiques et demeure non différentiable. Essentiellement, on maximise la première valeur propre généralisée par rapport à des ensembles de volume constant. Comme la plus petite valeur propre est Hadamard semi-différentiable, il est possible de caractériser l'optimalité et de faire des calculs. Dans un deuxième temps, on a élargi l'espace de Sobolev des flexions pour permettre l'étude de la maximisation par rapport à des profils possiblement dégénérés. Ces nouveaux espaces « sur mesure » introduisent de nouveaux défis mathématiques. Le problème du flambage de la colonne est un cas particulier des problèmes impliquant l'optimisation de la plus petite valeur propre lorsqu'elle n'est pas simple. Ceci donne à ce travail une portée mathématique et numérique beaucoup plus grande.

Représentation et identification des hypersurfaces Thèses et mémoires dirigés / 2012-12

Abstract
L’objectif à moyen terme de ce travail est d’explorer quelques formulations des problèmes d’identification de forme et de reconnaissance de surface à partir de mesures ponctuelles. Ces problèmes ont plusieurs applications importantes dans les domaines de l’imagerie médicale, de la biométrie, de la sécurité des accès automatiques et dans l’identification de structures cohérentes lagrangiennes en mécanique des fluides. Par exemple, le problème d’identification des différentes caractéristiques de la main droite ou du visage d’une population à l’autre ou le suivi d’une chirurgie à partir des données générées par un numériseur. L’objectif de ce mémoire est de préparer le terrain en passant en revue les différents outils mathématiques disponibles pour appréhender la géométrie comme variable d’optimisation ou d’identification. Pour l’identification des surfaces, on explore l’utilisation de fonctions distance ou distance orientée, et d’ensembles de niveau comme chez S. Osher et R. Fedkiw ; pour la comparaison de surfaces, on présente les constructions des métriques de Courant par A. M. Micheletti en 1972 et le point de vue de R. Azencott et A. Trouvé en 1995 qui consistent à générer des déformations d’une surface de référence via une famille de difféomorphismes. L’accent est mis sur les fondations mathématiques sous-jacentes que l’on a essayé de clarifier lorsque nécessaire, et, le cas échéant, sur l’exploration d’autres avenues.

Représentation et détection des images et des surfaces déformables Thèses et mémoires dirigés / 2011-08

Abstract
La représentation d'une surface, son lissage et son utilisation pour l'identification, la comparaison, la classification, et l'étude des variations de volume, de courbure ou de topologie sont omniprésentes dans l'aire de la numérisation. Parmi les méthodes mathématiques, nous avons retenu les transformations difféomorphiques d'un pattern de référence. Il y a un grand intérêt théorique et numérique à approcher un difféomorphisme arbitraire par des difféomorphismes engendrés par des champs de vitesses. Sur le plan théorique la question est : "est-ce que le sous-groupe de difféomorphismes engendrés par des champs de vitesses est dense dans le groupe plus large de Micheletti pour la métrique de Courant ?" Malgré quelques progrès réalisés ici, cette question demeure ouverte. Les pistes empruntées ont alors convergé vers le sous-groupe de Azencott et de Trouvé et sa métrique dans le cadre de l'imagerie. Elle correspond à une notion de géodésique entre deux difféomorphismes dans leur sous-groupe. L'optimisation est utilisée pour obtenir un système d'équations état adjoint caractérisant la solution optimale du problème d'identification à partir des observations. Cette approche est adaptée à l'identification de surfaces obtenues par un numériseur tel que, par exemple, le scan d'un visage. Ce problème est beaucoup plus difficile que celui d'imagerie. On doit alors introduire un système de référence courbe et une surface à facettes pour les calculs. On donne la formulation du problème d'identification et du calcul du changement de volume par rapport à un scan de référence.
