The study of randomness has become an essential part of the description of phenomena in nature and society. The goal of probability theory is to give a rigorous treatment of the processes involved in these phenomena.

Research interests of our faculty include: the study of the random evolution of populations and its applications to genetics, the long term behavior of chaotic systems and their convergence to equilibrium, the study of stochastic processes in financial models, and the study of the stochastic processes in physics, in particular in statistical mechanics.
