Applied mathematics may be defined by both the mathematical methods employed and their domains of application. However, they all have the common objective of responding to questions which deal with the interfaces between mathematics and other disciplines.

The Department has in its ranks specialists in the numerical simulation of flows of compressible and of non-Newtonian fluids, in the modelling of turbulent combustion and of the propagation of interfaces, in control and geometric optimisation of form and structure and in the modelling of physiological systems, notably neuronal and cardiovascular.
